Periodontics
We specialise in treating gum problems.
Periodontics is the speciality of Dentistry that studies the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases or abnormalities that affect the tissues that support the teeth. The main periodontal diseases are Gingivitis and Periodontitis.
It is a disease that affects the gums and the rest of the structures that support the teeth, 90% of the population over the age of 35 suffers from it and is the leading cause of tooth loss in the world population.
Periodontal disease manifests as gingivitis (inflammation and bleeding of the gum without affecting the bone) or periodontitis, where destruction of the bone that supports the tooth occurs. If not treated in time it can cause tooth loss. A periodontal treatment consists of the correction of the hygiene technique for the control of the bacterial plaque, up to the elimination of its triggering factors (dental stones or tartar and periodontal pockets).
Do any of these symptoms sound familiar?
Sometimes periodontal disease can progress without any symptoms or pain. During a regular dental checkup, the dentist looks for signs of periodontal disease, so the undetected disease can be treated before it progresses. Some warning signs to watch out for are having red and inflamed gums, bleeding when brushing your teeth and when flossing, having bad breath, increased tooth sensitivity and having mobility of any tooth.
